The "Advertising Standards Authority" (ASA) the United Kingdom took the decision to remove waves advertising concerning the "PokerCam", an innovation on 888Poker where participants can play in opening their webcam. " After receiving a complaint the year last, the ASA came to the conclusion that advertising violated the standards of the industry concerning the links between gambling, seduction and sexual prowess.
Yet, the advertising in question seemed rather innocuous: a man, sitting in front of his computer, opens her webcam to play poker online. A voice announces that "you never know who can fall on the tables of PokerCam. Then the ad shows different opponents, including a group of women as well as another woman in bikini playing next to the pool.
The SAA decision is based on the fact that the advertising was too suggestive, was use of seduction. Since there was a link between seduction and gambling, ASA has determined that 888 Poker violated the code of conduct on advertising.
888 poker, for its part, objected to this link between seduction and games of chance: their advertising showed that the site was innovative and was an exciting place to play. With regard to women that found in advertising, 888 Poker believes that the relationship between these women and the advertising player is simply a platonic relationship.
The ASA and the poker online doesn't seem to make good bedfellows. In 2009, the ASA had also banned advertising of Party Poker which had as its slogan, 'players win more on Party Poker'. This advertisement was rejected due to the fact that it was believe that players on Party Poker earns more money than playing on other sites. Later in 2009, an advertisement of Betfair with Annette Obrestad had also been withdrawn. The slogan, signed by a pseudonym for Annette Obrestad (Annette_15): "the online experience is measured in parts, and not year. Join the new generation of players. "... which could imply that minors could play on this site. Over the past years, advertisements for PaddyPowerPoker, PKR, William Hill, Bet365 and Red Cherry Poker in turn also removed. A single complaint from a citizen is sufficient for an advertisement to be scrutinized by the ASA.
